ROCK ‘N’ ROLL LOS ANGELES HALF MARATHON + [ 5K ]

Posted on December 07 2015

LA bound & out… still on a runner’s high from last weekend’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon & 5K.
I’ve yet to meet a Rock ‘n’ Roll Tour Stop that I didn’t like.

With just three weeks until our Half Marathon in Las Vegas, we took part in the LA 5k. It wasn’t as easy as my other training runs and a bit frustrating. During the run, hesitation took over and I started to second-guess if I could even do the 13.1 in Las Vegas. My husband really pushed me and I ended up PR-ing, despite my self-doubt.

Looking back on yesterday, it sounds ridiculous… yes, I can do the Half in Las Vegas… without a doubt!
As a runner, sometimes your mind, not your body, can be the toughest obstacle to push through. Maybe the part I love most about running, is overcoming and pushing through the doubt.

[ the stay ]

Los Angeles is a quick two hour drive from San Diego if  you time it right. We arrived late Saturday afternoon, picked up our bibs and checked in at The Line Hotel in Korea Town, just off Wilshire Blvd., a hip artsy hotel that I just loved! As a Creative Director, I really appreciated the little details that have gone into the experience of a stay at The Line.

Once all settled in, we explored the hotel a bit and of course snapped a few photos of our stay. With each run trip we take, one of the best parts is exploring a new city.

The Line Hotel had everything we needed, including a cute little Cafe, two restaurants and gorgeous city views. We later found out that there were plenty of well known restaurants that fit a carb-heavy “runner meal” just blocks away.

We dined at the Commissary, which is a “MUST” if you are in LA. Everything was unique from the menus to the atmosphere to the glassware used to serve cocktails in. They put aesthetic detail into every aspect of the dining experience and of course, the food was amazing! If we weren’t running the next day, we would have tried one of everything.

[ the run ]

Running in a new city can be overwhelming. Rock ‘n’ Roll/Competitor has done an amazing job easing the transition and making the travel as convenient as possible. They provided good hotel partners that are accessible to the event. We had a quick 10 minute drive from our hotel to the start of the event, there was plenty of easy accessible parking. Since they made the logistics seamless, it was easier for runners to focus purely on the race.  And as always the vibe of the event screamed “Sunday Funday”!

I was worried it would be chilly when we arrived at the race at 6AM, yet the weather was ideal. The morning started off with thousands of costumed runners hustling around to get to their corrals while the most gorgeous sunrise was taking place. The sky was lit up with beams of sunlight and scatters of vibrant reds and oranges. The energy, from both nature and the runners around me, was contagious and invigorating.

The 5k course was nice, flat and easy if you were having a good run day… unlike me. The best part of our run for me was running by an LAPD patrol car where two officers were blaring “Eye of the Tiger” and cheering us on. That moment gave me that extra motivation to get this 5k done! I’m not sure the spectators know how much they encourage so many people during their run, but their support is so cherished.

[ the race bling ]

We run for the “BLING”, right? The Rock ‘n’ Roll LA race bling is the cutest little pumpkin, which was the perfect fit for a Halloween-themed run. We had a blast & will definitely be scheduling the Rock ‘n’ Roll LA 5K into our 2016 run travel plans, in hopes more will join us since it’s so close to San Diego.
