Kick off your Independence Day celebration with a run through the historic town of Coronado. Crown City Classic features a 12K and 5K distance with a half mile Kids Race. Why a 12K distance? Because nothing is more patriotic than running 7.4 miles on 7/4 in one of America’s most patriotic cities!
This race is not for the faint of heart. With a slippery, rocky course up 3,022-foot Mount Marathon, it’s definitely not your ordinary 5k. In fact, it can be so treacherous that organizers have to brief runners on navigating the single track terrain safely prior to the run. This race has been around since 1915 and slots are on a lottery basis.
Clawson boasts the fastest run in the Midwest, with runners darting for a heart-pounding mile for some amazing cash prizes. Men can snag $1,000 if they beat a 4 minute time and women if they cross the finish line before 4:30.
If you want to start your Independence Day in the most epic way possible, this test of human strength is for you. This ultra boasts a brutal course through three mountain passes and slick rock desert that features 12,000 feet of elevation gain in the first 24 miles and 11,000 feet of descent in the last 17. Add the intense desert heat and you’ll understand why the race has a 50 percent dropout rate.
If you’d like to earn your brew, take on this 4k dart through beautiful Boulder that finishes with Avery beers and breakfast. Nothing more American than that!
Sauvie Island, Oregon
Hills not your thing? Take on “running the Flat,” as it’s referred to, a course on the scenic farmlands of Sauvie Island, so flat that a PR is all but guaranteed. The post race celebration features strawberry shortcake, bluegrass bands, hot dogs and veggie dogs.
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
This historic race is the largest and oldest race in Beaufort County, boasting nearly 1,500 runners and walkers yearly. The Firecracker run is 5ks and a top 10 race in South Carolina.
If you’re a top finisher in this hilly, New England 10k, you’ll snag a L.L. Bean gift card. Not quite as fast on your feet but a speedy typist? The first 400 people to register for the race take home a pair of New Balance running shoes.
Pacific Palisades, CA
Cross the finishline and earn not only a medal, but a spot on a float in the Fourth of July parade that follows. You’ll have plenty to look at as you run, as the residents compete in an epic house-decorating contest.
Atlanta, GeorgiaWith a gigantic American flag that measures 60-by-30 feet and takes 15 volunteers to assemble at the starting line, this 10k will surely set the patriotic spirit if the day. This race boasts 60,000 participants on average, making it the world’s largest 10k and largest road race in the country.
